Sinus Lift
A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. The bone is added between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are located on either side of the nose. The sinus membrane is lifted or "lifted," hence the name, to make room for the additional bone.
A sinus lift is typically performed when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed. This can occur due to bone loss as a result of periodontal (gum) disease, tooth loss, or the natural anatomy of the jaw.
By adding bone to the upper jaw, a sinus lift creates a stable foundation for dental implants, which can then be used to replace missing teeth. This not only restores the functionality of the teeth but also helps maintain the natural shape of the face and prevents further bone loss in the jaw.
