The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) considers dental caries (tooth decay) to be the single most common chronic childhood disease.
Studies have shown that fluoride treatment can reduce the risk of cavities in children by up to 30%. This is because fluoride helps to remineralize tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and bacteria. It's especially beneficial for children because their developing teeth are more susceptible to decay.
The application of fluoride treatment is quick and painless. Our dentist or dental hygienist will first clean the teeth to remove any plaque or debris. Then, they will apply a fluoride gel, foam, or varnish to the teeth using a brush or tray. The fluoride is left on the teeth for a short period of time to allow it to penetrate the enamel. Afterward, the excess fluoride is rinsed off, and the child is advised not to eat or drink for about 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to fully absorb into the teeth. Adults who are at a higher risk for developing tooth decay can also be treated.
Fluoride treatment is a simple and effective way to help protect children's teeth from cavities and promote good oral health.
